Economic Downturn Brings Creativity

On July 26^th, Yamet Arts was mentioned in a New York Times article about how hard economic times cause artists and art dealers to find new ways of cooperating with each other. The article, by Phillip Lutz, titled Economic Downturn Forces Groups to get Creative uses as one example the For Love of Art Show last February, sponsored by Rick Yamet and Ben Green. Because attendance was far above expectations, Yamet and Green are considering follow up shows in the future. As hosts of the show, Yamet and Green feel that working together with local artists and dealers is a winning situation for all those involved. The team work shows these joint efforts can be successful and benefit the artists and the sponsors while providing the public with access to a variety of creative work even during difficult economic times.

For the Love of Art Exhibition A Smashing Success

Turnout for the Valentine weekend’s event exceeded all expectations. Crowds were estimated to be over 1500 hundred people for the 3 hour reception. The parking lot was filled to capacity and people were forced to park 3 blocks away from the Old Hat Factory. Local residents that attended said they had never seen an event generate so much interest in Peekskill. Others commented on the quality and depth of art on display; “I never knew there was so much great art in the Hudson River Valley” said one guest; “It’s a magnificent show that displays the depth of talent our local artists have” added another.

Rick Yamet and Penny Yamet of Yamet Arts, Inc., Ben Green, owner of the Old Hat Factory and all the organizers and curators are calling the show a success for everyone involved. It proves that when we work together on a project like this we can put on a great show that benefits the entire community.

Camilo Rojas' Photography to be Exhibit at For the Love of Art

Camilo Rojas was born in Venezuela. He studied sculpture, graphic design and printmaking. In 1982 he moved with to New York where he earned a Masters degree in photography at Pratt Institute. In 2007 he was a Fulbright Scholar to Venezuela. Camilo began showing his work in 1971 and it has been in the most important museums in Venezuela. His work represented Venezuela in the XI Bienal de San Juan del Grabado Latinoamericano y del Caribe. His art books were exhibited in a traveling exhibit in museums in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In 1985 he received 3rd prize in the 7th European Biannual Salon of Photography. In 1988 Rojas directed and edited the videodisk “Interaction of Color by Joseph Albers” exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Berlin. He began teaching printmaking in 1973 and has been the Communications and Media Arts chair at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie since 1992, where he implemented the television program “Learning in Progress”. Rojas continues to exhibit his photography, videos, drawings and installations nationally and internationally.

Artist's Statement: My recent artworks combine painting and drawing with photographic and digital images, expanding traditional 2-D formats into installations. Working intuitively and through association, I print, paint, and draw onto a variety of supports, creating a layering of images, textures and media. The content has focused on issues of aging, temporality and memory -- I’m interested in exploring these as a means for expressing subjectivity as contingent, pluralistic, and emerging through time.

A Show of Heartfelt, Diverse Works

Susan Hodara of the New York Times wrote in her review of our soon to open For the Love of Art Exhibit "visitors...will experience a confluence of contrasts. The show includes works by more than 37 contemporary Hudson Valley artists, along with approximately 60 pieces by icons like Warhol, Picasso and Rembrandt.Media used run the gamut from painting, drawing, sculpture and photography to installations, collage and video. The contemporary artists come from diverse ethnic backgrounds; vary in age from 20s to 60s; and live from as far south as Mount Vernon and Irvington up to Hudson, Beacon and Catskill. Works by Modern and Contemporary Artists from the Hudson Valley

Celebrating 10 years in Peekskill, NY noted art dealer and collector Rick Yamet of Yamet Arts Inc. and the Peekskill Hat Factory will be hosting a major exhibition of some of the Hudson Valley's finest artists. A curatorial panel has selected artists from Mt. Vernon to Hudson that will be featured alongside Picasso, Lichtenstein and other iconic artists from Yamet's impressive collection.

Connecting the work of the masters with up and coming talent Yamet and his sponsors hope to highlight the diversity of talent and artistry that continue to thrive in New York's Hudson Valley. A 20% commission of sales will be donated to the Hudson Valley Museum for Contemporary Art.

There will be a public reception from on Sunday February 15, 2009 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m., at Yamet Arts located at The Hat Factory in Suites 4 and 2E on 1000 N. Division Street in Peekskill.

The exhibition will run from February 14 - March 15, 2009. Gallery hours: Saturdays and Sundays, 12 - 4 p.m.

The artists will have their work featured on the Yamet Arts website and the option to be represented by the gallery for 6 months. Free admission to HVCCA with "For Love of Art" card.

The Hat Factory is located at 1000 North Division Street in Peekskill, NY, providing business space and artist studios. The Hat Factory takes its name from the 1879 building in which it resides, continuing the tradition of artisan craftsmanship within these old brick walls which over the years have witnessed the creation of everything from fedoras to cast iron stoves. Working with artist tenants, owner Ben Green has hosted numerous art exhibitions in the building since 2007 including The Peekskill Project 2008, Collaborative Concepts at the Hat Factory and The Art Lot.

Leslie Lew's works of art "revisit early Pop art subject matter while addressing core issues of American culture. She has been painting for more than 25 years. Her trademark style, which she refers to as 'sculpted oils', begins with an acrylic base that is then layered with thick impasto oils. This style can result in works that are up to 3 inches thick." Lew, a native New Yorker, eceived her BFA and MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited at many museums including the New Museum and the Guggenheim.

Artist's Statement: The Hudson River as a source of inspiration was the motivating factor for creating this work. River Meditations uses imagery recorded from the banks of the Hudson during the winters of 1999 and 2003. I was drawn to the transformation of its surface in winter and to the power of nature as creator. Ice became an ever-changing entity, reforming itself into flowing structures. Light danced off fragmented patterns and found its way into watery crevices. This was the beginning of an investigation into the nature of transformed realities. The footage became a springboard for interpretation accomplished by digital processing.

Painter Michael Ricardo Andreev was born in Brooklyn, lived in Jamica for thirteen years returning to the U.S. in 1978 at the age of 16. Andreev developed his artistic vision while surrounded by the color and texture of Jamaica.

Monochromatic and spare, Andreev's work reflects historical concepts and is influenced by Anselm Kiefer, Robert Motherwell, Gerhard Richter, and Franz Klein. Andreev has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Eickholdt Gallery in New York, and at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. His work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), as well as important private collections.

Yamet Arts is pleased to include Christopher Albert in the upcoming For the Love of Art exhibit. Albert has exhibited extensively in the Hudson Valley area and in and around Denver, Colorado. He creates abstract works in a variety of media - painting, drawing and sculpture.

Among other projects Albert is the director of Kork, a bulletin board exhibit space above the photo copier in a CPA's office in Poughkeepsie. Exhibits rotate bi-monthly and encourage artists to explore the nature of work in a non-art context.

The Genesis paintings are painted on pages from the adult magazine Genesis. The original images in the photo essays have been obscured with paint leaving in many, the accompanying narrative text as a portion of absurd poetry.

For the Love of Art: Kate Vrijmoet

Vrijmoet exhibited 50 Paintings in 50 Days in November 2008 at her home studio in Pawling. She determined to paint a portrait a day for fifty days. The resulting works are large scale latex on paper. The endeavor entailed lining up subjects as well as painting them. Kate found it easier to find subjects as word of her project spread and volunteers came forward; the subjects include many familiar local faces.

"I have made choices in favor of energy in the brushwork, a direct result of the rapidity with which I work, in favor of the visibility of process, manifest in the strings and drips and the general truth to the materials I am using in favor of emotion, how I feel about the figure and the subject ... I want the intensity and clarity with which I experience the subject to be accessible to you, to engage you, so I can share that connection with you." Using computer software (Apple IMovie, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Photoshop), and an artistic eye, these panoramic scenes are created without the characteristic fish eye distortion of traditional panoramic photography.
